The Eastern Hemisphere, Physics, Algebra 1 & the 5-Paragraph Essay

As a new school year kicks off, we begin a round of new topics, new interests, and lots of fun extras for 2013-14.

This year we begin each day with our study of the bible. We are using the PictureSmart Bible curriculum and will be drawing a 1-page summary of each book of the old testament. We will also be spending time in Psalms reading 1 book each day of the school year.

Our core focus for history, geography, and literature this year has a focus on the Eastern Hemisphere. We will be notebooking facts as we study each country and region, mapping the areas and learning to accurately map the entire region by heart. Our literature will feature historical fiction to go along with our review of regional histories.

As we continue to study the basics in Language Arts (grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and dictation) we begin focusing on the ability to write a basic 5-paragraph paper which will be the basis of most future writing. We will also learn to write a research paper in both the science arena as well as another topic of their choice from our Eastern Hemisphere studies.

In mathematics, we will be detouring from standard methodology and working through 120 days of pre-algebra in the form of all word problems while learning physics, economics, and biology. After this we will be prepared for a high school level Algebra 1 course.
